Oh the Best of News! [and Other Things]

My missing camera has been found! While driving to breakfast yesterday morning, my roommate found it in the backseat of my car under the driver’s seat. So instead of it being right under my nose, it was right under my butt… There’s some irony hiding in there somewhere I’m sure.

So, as soon as my physics homework and biology homework is done, I shall be back! With at least 2 posts today. Get excited. But since I’m here bothering you anyhow, I shall share things! I’ve had one of those weeks where I feel like I’m just not doing that well (the mono is gone by the way), and I’m kind of unwanted to be totally honest. I hate it. So, I’ve made a new playlist called “Yeah, I’m Hot as Fuck,” because sometime you just need that boost.

“Keep looking my way, my head is held high. You wanna bring me down? I dare you to try.”

xx

ps. this is the playlist, but it’s being quite rude… This is the best I could do, but the link works fine 🙂

[DIY] Colorblock Pouch

For all your multitasking needs, I present you my most recent love in the DIY world, courtesy of the lovely Just B. As you must know, the Celine pouch was and still is a big effing deal. But let’s be honest, I don’t have the money to blow on it, especially considering I’m on my shopping hiatus (for the record I’m one day in and struggling). This image has been floating around the internet and apparently sparked her desire to make her own pouch.

These pictures are not of my actual pouch, which I’ll make with the American Apparel pouch in the color “tan” with a red stripe. I also want to make one in a lavender purple or maybe a pale pink and maybe do sort of tribal diagonal black stripes. I’m not sure yet, but the ideas keep pouring out of my brain!

1. Gather your life into a 3×3 foot area. You need an American Apparel Pouch, or something similar, white acrylic paint, and the acrylic paint of your choice, a paint brush, painter’s tape, acrylic coating spray, and a new playlist from 8tracks, and if you’ve never checked 8tracks out, you need to.

2. Tape off the area you want to be your bright color with the painter’s tape, either by measuring or eyeballing it.

3.  Mix a bit of water into your white paint, and brush downwards onto the leather. You need some water to help the paint adhere to the leather. (For the record, I did do some research, and acrylic paint is the proper paint to use on leather, so it shouldn’t flake or peel).

4. After the white almost fully dries, paint over the white with your bright color, with no water added to it. The white acts as a primer to your color, and depending on the color leather you use, you may still need to do more than 2 coats. Just B used a blow dryer to make the coats move along faster, and she also said it works great for getting the coats to dry evenly.

5. When you’re satisfied with the level of saturation of your bright color, cover the non-painted leather of your pouch with a magazine or newspaper, and follow the directions on your glossy clear acrylic spray to cover the rough feeling of the acrylic paint, and give it a smooth texture like the rest of the pouch! Let sit (untouched) for at least 2 hours, or whatever your acrylic spray says (listen to it! It knows the plan!). And enjoy!

What Higher Education Does to Us:

This is by no means a post slamming college education, I’m in the middle of mine and A. loving it, and B. really quite excited to be here in general. But, there are some things I see people do, or hear stories of from my friends, that makes me want to stereotype them all. Not in a bad way, but in a funny way. Sorry, there’s no other way to put that.

1. The Professor with No Degree – This guy is honestly quite scary. Luckily, there’s only usually ever one of these guys in a lecture hall at a time, but that’s all the professor or the rest of us students can take. He sits up perfectly straight, answers every single question that the professor asks, even if it’s “Oh, where did I set my whiteboard marker?” If he doesn’t yell it out, it’s because he’s creepily whispering the answer under his breath. This particular character sounds like something from a bad 80’s high school movie, but I swear they’re out there. For example, freshman year, my friends had a kid in their chemistry class that would have arguments with the professor in class (and always be wrong). He also happened to be obsessed with the American TV show NCIS… So that was his new secret nickname. By the end of the year my friends were grumbling how “if NCIS says one more thing in class today, I WILL throw my calculator at his head!”)

2. The Jitterbug – This girl ends up getting glares from the whole class by then end of the lecture. She needs something else every single moment of class. First she comes in late, has to take out her papers, and pen and cell phone, and laptop. You think after a few minutes she’s done rustling. Nope. No such luck, now she needs gum, and has to rustle around for that for another three minutes, and in her frenzy to find gum she drops a very loud notebook off her desk. This girl is usually done removing and finding her life in her oversized tote bag about 5 minutes before class is over.

3. The Prom Queen – There’s generally not too much wrong with this girl, but none the less she disgusts me. On an average day, she flounces into class just on time in black leggings, Ugg boots, and a Northface jacket with some generic white v-neck tee shirt underneath carrying her sorority’s customized greek letter tote bag… wearing way too much makeup. Dark makeup, in the middle of the day. She then spends the whole class texting her ‘friends’ with wayyyyy tooo many vowellsss in herr wordss. In her defense, most of the time she’s really a nice person. I just need to get her to agree to let me give her a makeover, that’s all.

4. The Reader – This one I’ll never understand. I honestly saw her more in high school than now in college but, this girl comes to class and honestly looks like she’s ready to learn. She comes on time, sets out all her various materials and then…. cracks open a book? Not even a school book, a fun reading book that, in most cases, I’d like to get my paws on as well. But you’re in class! You cannot multitask that way my dear, I’m very sorry. In the case of college, why come to class when you’re going to read anyhow?! This girl only bothers me because I love to read, and on a given day if I had a choice that’s what I’d be doing. She makes me jealous and re-think my priorities basically haha.

5. The Sleeper – More often than not, an average guy that likes video games way too much. The new COD (Call of Duty) came out so how is he not supposed to play it? He can be seen slowly falling asleep throughout class, though occasionally waking up to glance around the room, as if afraid he teleported somehow in his sleep. I actually witnessed one of these guys today! He woke up just in time to answer the questions each student gets points for. In his defense, he was cute, I like video games (a lot), and he held open the door for me on the way in and the way out of the hall.

[Weekly Shades] Neon, Now. Right Now.

So it’s still winter. It’s still icky and gloomy and freezing freaking cold (I actually physically couldn’t feel my neck or face earlier today because of the wind). So my manicure is attempting it’s very hardest to remind me of summer, and oceans and craziness that happens with me and my friends (side-note: did you know it is possible to get lost in a bathroom? It is. I stand as witness).

I used China Glaze‘s “Turned Up Turquoise (Neon)” and then used OPI‘s “Black Shatter” on my ring finger, but I applied it very lightly, and then sort of swooshed the brush around as it was drying to get the cool almost zebra effect with it. Fair warning with the shattered part- you get one shot at it, so be careful.

Do Dating Rules Apply to Shopping Too?

Okay, obviously not all of them. I was thinking specifically of that one where supposedly (I’ve never tried it myself) if you hold off on sex for a few months, it’s even better when you do have it. I’m a fairly poor college student… My dad has informed me I get to go to Chicago, (oh the magical windy city, I love you) for my spring break. I’m going to not do ANY shopping until I go. I just decided this a few days ago, and to be totally honest, I’m dying inside already. So does shopping after an extended hiatus make it better? I’d like to think it will haha 🙂

Hi, my name is Lisa and I am a shopaholic.

I plan on going all over the city when I’m there: to Akira in Bucktown, to Topshop, and basically the whole miracle mile… My bank account is going to take a major hit, even if I pay off my credit card now, and my dad gives me a little helping out money. I’m mentally preparing. And I already am missing it.

So if you happen to know any way to sooth my shopping deprived soul, or any good places to go to in Chicago *wink wink* I’d really appreciate it.

So It’s the New Year, The World Hasn’t Ended, What Now?

Predictions for the new year (and believe me, I’ve got a bunch of them):

Music: I should start by saying, a few of these artists I’m just waiting to blow up here in America, honestly not sure when they will, but I promise they will. I’d normally have put Lana Del Rey on this list, but after her absolutely awful SNL performance this past Saturday night, there’s no way in hell I’d ever pay money to see her live. And I give mad props to whoever fixes her voice on her recordings. They’re getting paid their money’s worth.

1. Sky Ferreira – Love this girl. She was originally a model, and I believe she still is modeling, but she’s quite young (20, if that) and can belt it. I recommend 17, Obsession, One, and 108, and for your viewing pleasure, I give you Obsession.

2. SHINee -These next two are going to sound weird, and I still tend to agree except I’ve read on multiple music-related trend forcasting websites that Korean pop music is going to be huge in 2012. Even though I can’t understand a word of these guys except ‘lucifer, love-a-tronic, and love-a-holic,’ I find myself singing in Korean (really), loving their beat and their dancing skills are killer. So, give the boys of SHINee a shot, and watch Lucifer:

3. Girls’ Generation – This is the 2nd Korean pop band, and these girls are even cooler to me than SHINee. There are 9, yes, nine of them. They remind me of the Pussycat Dolls but with a real fashion sense, and much better singing, though their whole ‘thing’ is refined, classy sexiness. I’m a fan of Run Devil Run, and The Boys. Here is The Boys in English (they also have the video in Korean). Honestly, I could see these ladies blowing up and the fast tempo is something I could definitely see being played in clubs in the near future:

Color Trends/ Fashion Trends: Some of these I’m jumping out of my seat for, and others I think I’ll try to avoid completely. According to Pantone (the people who decide all the hot colors for everyone – interior designs and on the runway), “Tangerine Tango” is the color for 2012, though some other ‘in’ colors are black (naturally), teal, sulfur yellow, nudes, pale pinks, and pale blues and grays. Other trends that are going to be in for 2012 include pastels, neutrals in layers, leather (thank god) is still in, color blocking, as well as patterns and lace, plus menswear with a twist seems to be staying for a while too.  I’ve also noticed quite a bit of Indian influence, in both patterns, style, and length of garments. Here’s a little taste of what was seen on the runway:

Nail Trends: I really  hope that that sharp claw-like nail thing never translates over to the real-world, there’s no way I could do it, sorry. But, I do love the polish trends that are already sweeping in this year. As a nail polish fiend, I’ve found there to be a few that are outstanding: Ready? Good.

1. New Neons – Pretty much anything goes, as long as it’s bright and gives your hands a bit of pop! I’m a fan of a bright teal-y green, magenta, royal purple, and if you’re going really crazy I approve orange, or even green. If you want to try out this trend but don’t want to spend a ton of money initially, I recommend American Apparel‘s nail polish. At $6 a bottle, you know you’re getting something good but if you don’t like it you’re not going to feel guilty tossing it (which by the way is a terrible thing to do. Don’t do it. Forget I even said it.)

2. Pastels – Anything really – from gray to blue to pink to buff to honey, it’s all in, and they all look good with everyone’s skin tones. Zoya has this promo video for a new line they have (I’m not a huge fan of the video, but it gives a good idea of color range for pastels)

3. Blue/greens – So far, I’ve fallen in love with the clean colors Nails, Inc. has to offer in the blue-green department, but obviously, as with everything else, this is just a jumping off point. The one shown below is Haymarket by Nails, Inc.

4. Glitters Gone Wild – Nicki Minaj and The Muppet’s collections from OPI have seemed to start this craze. I did a Weekly Shade on the Muppets’ “Rainbow Connection” earlier in the month, and I stand firmly by this one. I do think there are the right and wrong times to be wearing a full on glitter manicure, but the other trends of the year can be subtle enough that this one works. Also, Bloomsbury Square (a Nails, Inc. polish) is AMAZING. We bought it for my roommate for her birthday.

So I’m a Failure, Did You Know?

I’ve been quite the slacker the past weeks, and I’m truly truly sorry. Let me explain: I found out I have mono this past Wednesday and have been attempting to sleep it off while starting classes (they started last week also). Since then, I’ve had a quiz and 3 homework assignments due. And on top of that I’ve been figuring out the application to graduate school and what classes I need to take in the next year to graduate on time. Ugh. It’s all boring, I’m very aware. But I figured I owe you an explanation.

To make up for my lack of presence I give you a few predictions for the coming year, and I’m giggling to myself already about a few of them… And a DIY from FujiFiles, it’s a bit old in the fashion and blogging world, but I’m in love. It’s a perfect iPad case/ purse-y type clutch for my insane multitasking. Later today, I’ll post my weekly shade of nail polish (this one is really brightening up my crappy winter mood), and then depending on how quickly my physics homework and animal science homework gets done tonight, I’ll post a new outfit post (welcome to the redundancy department of redundancy, sorry) either tonight or tomorrow.

We’re All In the Gutter, But Some of Us Are Looking At the Stars

[Quote by Oscar Wilde; yes, I’m a literary nerd]

[Weekly Shades] Prettiest Peridot

I am grouchy! Do you want to know why? Probably not, but I’m telling you anyhow. A. Classes are starting up Monday – death – and B. My digital camera friend has taken an unexpected vacation and hasn’t told me where she went! (Her name is Pearl if you happen to run across her sunbathing somewhere).

I’m a little late on my weekly manicure, but I was in Iowa covered in a fashionable color of ‘chicken blood red’. (Yes, I’m totally serious, that’s what you get for having a real life job doing animal nutritional research. For anyone PETA affiliated, we didn’t hurt the birds or kill them, just taking blood to test for various levels of things to make sure they’re healthy. Now, shush, I was talking about more exciting fashionable thingies!

This is probably my favorite nailpolish ever. Chanel’s limited edition Peridot (shade #531). It goes on like a dream, only two thin coats needed to make it totally opaque, and it goes with everything. This is a ridiculous color; it shifts. Sometimes it’s green, sometimes it’s gold, sometimes it’s got this gorgeous cobalt blue tint to it. To be totally honest it reminds me a bit of an emerald beetle’s shell and I say this in the most attractive way possible, honestly, it’s beautiful. I’m a bit late on the blogging scene to be talking about this particular polish, but my love of it overpowers my lateness in the game, sorry.

[First Peridot picture close-up: Polish Police]

[Second Peridot picture: from my crappy Blackberry camera… I’m less than pleased Pearl!]

If you ever have a chance to buy it, jump on it. Have a lovely rest of the weekend! Outfit pics to come as soon as Pearl comes home to me!
